A brief look at Spider-Man running on PS4 and PS5.
Spider-Man Remastered, a bonus available only in Miles Morales’ Ultimate Edition, is out today alongside the new game. The remaster adds ray tracing to the existing game, and upgrades many of its assets for PS5.
It also offers a performance mode that brings the framerate up to 60fps, from the standard 30fps in fidelity mode, and on PS4/PS4 Pro.
So how do they all compare? IGN put together a neat video quickly going through a few cutscenes and gameplay moments from early on in the game. The video mainly focuses on PS4 vs PS5 in fidelity mode, but we also get a look how they both stack up to the performance mode.
Ray tracing in Spider-Man Remastered is immediately noticeable, particularly when looking at reflections in glass windows and puddles. The image is lighter overall compared to the tinted PS4 original.
Outside of the sharper textures and the obvious benefits of ray tracing, the more interesting mode is actually performance. The visual makeup there is almost on par with the PS4 Pro level of quality, with the obvious benefit of doubling the framerate. I’d argue the sacrifice is worth it, but I can completely see many switching over to fidelity mode to see the game in all its glory.
Save files from the PS4 game, in case you missed it, will eventually work on PS5, too. Insomniac is currently working on a patch to make this possible, available sometime in the next two weeks.
