You can’t stream Doom Eternal to an iPhone, because of Apple’s tight-assed rules about everything. But you can do it on the door of a fridge, thanks to Xbox Game Pass.
Instagrammer Richard Mallard delivered this tech demo on Monday. He appears to be playing on a Samsung Family Hub Smart Refrigerator, which has been around for about four years. It’s basically a fridge with a big tablet in the door, but if I told you someone was running Doom Eternal on that it wouldn’t be so interesting, would it.
Indeed, The Verge’s May 2016 review says the touchscreen “mostly acts like a gigantic phone on your fridge.” And therein lies the answer. Later Tuesday, Mallard posted another five minutes of Xbox Game Pass gameplay on YouTube, and in it he indicates he’s basically streamcasting play from his Samsung phone (which, of course, supports Xbox Game Pass Ultimate) to the fridge door, via the Samsung Smart View app.
“This is no crazy hack,” he says, before jumping right into Battletoads, and interrupting his game to pull a Red Bull from behind the monitor, next to the pickles or something.
Still, unlike Doom-sorta-on-a-pregnancy-test-stick, this is legit the game on unmodded OEM hardware. “Now is there a need? NO!” says Richard, channeling his inner George Bernard Shaw. “But can it be done? YES!”
